ABOUT

Pekin Police Department

The mission of the Pekin Police Department, a committed, serviced-oriented agency, is to protect life, human rights, and property through an effective proactive partnership with the community.

About the Pekin Police Department

The Pekin Police Department provides assistance and protection of life and property, under the general direction of the City Manager. The department’s responsibilities also include the appraisal of Pekin’s crime prevention and law enforcement issues and the development of appropriate solutions to meet those needs. This also includes adjusting department methods to better meet the challenges of today’s police force.

The department also ensures a friendly and safe community environment through the development, recommendation, and administration of the department’s operating budget to the City Council. By reviewing and substantiating department funds, and maintaining fiscal controls on department revenues and expenditures, the Pekin Police Department is able to meet the needs of the community.

Ordinances & Permits

Administrative Adjudication Hearings:

9:00 AM on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month
City Council Chambers Room 202
City Hall, 111 S Capitol Street, Pekin, IL 61554

Overview:

Code Enforcement citations are brought before the Administrative Adjudication process at city hall rather than through the courts. Administrative Adjudication is a proceeding in front of a hearing officer who listens to evidence presented by the City and by the accused, who then decides on liability or non-liability.Such hearings can be utilized for non-criminal offenses that are punishable only by a fine. Such hearings allow the accused to present their case in a less formal atmosphere where the strict rules of evidence in the circuit court do not necessarily apply. The hearing officer is an attorney licensed by the State of Illinois and is separate from the City’s legal department. Illinois statutes allow for an appeal of the hearing officer’s determination in the circuit court.

Crime Free Housing:

The Crime Free Housing ordinance assists landlords with problem tenants. This program allows the city to address issues with landlords who fail to address issues that involve illegal activities and problem tenants on their properties. This Crime Free Housing program equips landlords with the necessary tools they will need to ensure they have quality tenants.

Snow Routes & Parking Bands

Automatic Parking Bans:

Automatic parking bans take effect on SNOW ROUTES only any time there is an accumulation of 2″ of snow/ice and an additional 1″ or more is forecasted.

  • The parking ban is complete once the snow event has ended and the street is plowed from curb to curb.

Discretionary Parking Bans:

Discretionary parking bans take effect for ALL CITY STREETS any time the City Manager or his designee declare so.

  • The parking ban takes effect at the time declared, which must be at least 3 hours after the declaration.

Citizens who park on the streets during either parking ban, risk having their vehicle towed, and/or issued a $100 citation.

In the event of a City Wide Parking ban, that information will be announced through local media outlets including the City and Police Department’s social media accounts.

Police Department Programs

Community Policing is an important and vital aspect of crime prevention in any community. It is through community cooperation and planning that we can best ensure quality police services and an organized and effective crime prevention effort.

The Pekin Police Department is pleased to offer a variety of programs to help promote community safety and enhance the role of the department within the community. We hope that you will take the time to look at all of the Community events and programs that we offer the citizens of our community. We work very hard to maintain great relationships with those we serve.

Police Station Tours:

The Pekin Police Department offers police station tours to local groups and organizations as a way to strengthen community relationships and promote transparency. These tours give participants an inside look a daily operations, including how officers respond to calls, the equipment they use, and the roles of different divisions within the department. By opening their doors to the public, the department helps build trust, answer questions, and provide a better understanding of law enforcement in the community.

Crime Prevention:

The Crime Prevention Office, has the responsibility to educate the citizens of  Pekin on ways to protect themselves from being a victim of crime. This office also monitors, from police reports, trends in crime versus location, in order to assist Patrol and Investigations in curbing those activities.

HIDE

Hide your valuables in your car. Often times car burglars are looking for valuables in plain site. Make your car less appealing by hiding the valuables in your car, or simply removing them from your car at night.

LOCK

Lock your car doors! Most of the time, car burglaries occur because the car doors are left unlocked. Very seldom will criminals break the car windows to get inside. 97% of all vehicle burglaries occur because of car doors left unlocked.

TAKE

Take your keys! Many times, people will still leave their car keys in the ignition or in the cup holder with the car unlocked. Please remember to take your keys with you so you are not a victim of auto theft.

Automated License Plate Readers:

The Pekin Police Department uses Flock Safety technology to capture objective evidence without compromising on individual privacy.  The Department utilizes retroactive searches to solve crimes after they’ve occurred.  Additionally, the Department utilizes real time alerting of hotlist vehicles to capture wanted criminals.  In an effort to ensure proper usage and guardrails are in place, we have made our policies and usage statistics available to the public.  You may view our policies and usage statistics by clicking this link: https://transparency.flocksafety.com/pekin-il-pd.

Speed Spy:

The Speed Spy is used to collect data by placing it in problem area locations. It provides information such as:

  • Maximum speeds
  • Exact times that speeding vehicles are present
  • Total number of vehicles above speed limit

Through this data we can allocate our resources to better serve the citizen’s needs.
If you know of a problem area and would like to request the Speed Spy be placed in that area, contact the Pekin Police Department.
