Pekin Police Department

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

School Resource Officer (SRO)

The Pekin Police Department currently assigns two officers to Pekin Community High School as School Resource Officers (SROs).

Our SROs are sworn law enforcement officers dedicated to maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment. While fully empowered to enforce the law and respond to emergencies, the role extends far beyond traditional policing.

School Resource Officers work closely with school administrators, faculty, students, and parents to proactively prevent crime, address safety concerns, and build meaningful relationships within the school community. They maintain a visible presence on campus to deter criminal activity and respond quickly to incidents when needed.

SROs play a critical role in emergency preparedness, participating in threat assessments, coordinating safety planning, and assisting with drills and crisis response protocols. Through collaboration and early intervention, they help identify and mitigate potential risks before they escalate.

Equally important, SROs serve as mentors and positive role models. They provide law-related education and presentations on topics such as substance abuse prevention, internet safety, conflict resolution, and responsible decision-making. By fostering trust and open communication, they create a bridge between students and law enforcement.

For officers seeking an assignment that blends law enforcement, mentorship, and community engagement, the SRO position offers a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the next generation.
