Drone Team (UAS Unit)
The Drone Team has been a great add on to the department in making the community a safer place.
The Drone Team utilizes four advanced unmanned aircraft to support both Patrol and the Special Services Division. These platforms enhance situational awareness, improve officer safety, and provide critical real-time intelligence during rapidly evolving incidents.
Drones may be deployed for a variety of operational needs, including locating fleeing suspects, searching for missing or endangered persons, documenting crime scenes, and providing aerial support during public disasters, parades, and community events. Two of the department’s aircraft are equipped with high-powered zoom capabilities and thermal imaging, allowing officers to conduct effective nighttime searches and operations in low-visibility conditions.
The Drone Team also works closely with the Central Illinois Emergency Response Team (CIERT), providing overwatch during tactical operations and deploying drones into structures to gather intelligence prior to personnel entry. This capability significantly enhances safety and operational planning during high-risk incidents.
Each certified pilot trains monthly to maintain proficiency, ensure regulatory compliance, and confirm all equipment is mission-ready prior to deployment.
For officers interested in emerging law enforcement technology, aviation, and tactical support operations, the Drone Team offers a dynamic and forward-thinking specialty assignment.
