Pekin Police Department

SOCIAL WORKERS

Social Workers

The Social Services Division of the Pekin Police Department was established in 2023 to strengthen the department’s ability to serve community members experiencing crisis or complex social service needs. The division reflects the department’s commitment to a compassionate, service-oriented approach to public safety by addressing the underlying issues that often contribute to repeated calls for assistance.

The department social worker provides crisis intervention and support during critical incidents, assisting both officers and community members in situations involving mental health concerns, trauma, substance abuse, domestic disputes, and other behavioral or social challenges. Through on-scene response and follow-up services, the Social Services Division helps connect individuals and families with appropriate community resources, treatment providers, shelters, financial assistance programs, counseling services, and other local support systems.

In addition to direct case support, the division serves as a liaison between the police department and local, county, and state partners, including hospitals, schools, courts, mental health providers, and social service agencies. The role also includes assisting with mental health crisis reporting, supporting departmental wellness initiatives, and helping develop programs that address emerging community needs such as homelessness, addiction, and mental health concerns. While the division currently operates with one staff member, it was created with future growth in mind as funding opportunities become available.

Social workers play a vital role in strengthening communities by helping individuals overcome mental health challenges, economic hardship, and other barriers to stability. They protect vulnerable populations, connect people to critical resources, and help address broader issues related to access to healthcare and supportive services. Through education, advocacy, and direct intervention, social workers also help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health while supporting individuals, families, and first responders during times of crisis.

Joining or supporting the Social Services Division means being part of a forward-thinking effort to build a safer, healthier, and more connected community.
